Steve Noxx presents Quartermass

April 29th, 2013 | By

Michael-Lee Collard and Steve Noxx formed Quartermass and recorded their debut four track EP – Kaput! in their Cardiff (Wales/UK) based studio. Kaput!, combines original vocals, synths and guitars with lashings of big electronic beats and filthy bass (listen below).

Quartermass - Michael-Lee Collard & Steve NoxxProducer Steve Noxx said: “We wanted to create an original sound that would appeal to a festival crowd and global dance floors alike. Electronic dance music, electro, indie, pop and rock are being combined in events like Ibiza Rocks and we love it, so it seems the perfect time to be launching something like Quartermass.”

Vocalist and guitarist Michael-Lee Collard said: “The idea to form came about after discussing our influences, and basically what we are into. Steve and I do share similar tastes, but have performed music in the past that could be considered poles apart. Our influences are diverse and we wanted to reflect that in the music. We love film scores and advert music so that naturally came into our compositions. We wanted to make something deeper than the norm.”

Quartermass’s influences for ‘Kaput!’ included Joy Division, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Castles, Unkle and Gorillaz.

“Bankrupt”, a heavyweight in-your-face song with foundation shaking beats, bass and pissed off vocals. Guitars, synths and a drum machine – start as we mean to go on!

“Push Delete”, is all about big trippy drums and distorted synths, with an understated laidback vocal.

“Don’t Kick Out” features layered guitars with synthesized beats and a huge distorted bass guitar. The vocals complete this track with full on attitude.

“Losing My Soul” finishes off the EP in style. It’s crafted around a filthy pitch bending electro bassline with a really catchy vocal chorus based on abject themes displayed in the lyrics.

New EDM Project

June 19th, 2012 | By

I’ve been busy working on my latest project Quartermass with my new partner in crime, vocalist and guitarist Michael-Lee Collard.  I’m really excited about the project as we’re creating original alternative electronic dance music, with most of our tracks featuring a full original vocal.  We have just launched our website along with our debut four track EP ‘Kaput!’ (listen to it on our website or on the Quartermass SoundCloud).

Here’s a bit more info on Quartermass:

Quartermass, the brand new Cardiff (Wales/UK) based duo, blending guitar, vocal and electro grooves into genre crossing, main stage electronic dance music (EDM). Guitarist and vocalist Michael-Lee Collard joined forces with producer / DJ Steve Noxx mid 2011, with their resulting four track debut EP ‘Kaput!’ to be released shortly.

Collard’s ethereal vocals soar over the top of Noxx’s deconstructed beats and sacrilegious basslines. Quartermass’s influences for ‘Kaput!’ included Joy Division, Crystal Castles, Unkle and Gorillaz. The four track EP consists of ‘Don’t Kick Out’, ‘Losing My Soul’, ‘Push Delete’ and ‘Up At Night’.

A classically trained musician, Collard honed his skills playing in various bands and as a solo performer. Steve Noxx has enjoyed success with DJ’ing and production, including a residency in Ibiza and running his own record label.

Phase Seven Records On A Break

June 19th, 2012 | By

After running Phase Seven Records since 2006 and releasing productions from artists such as Will Gold, Tigran Organezov, Gordon Coutts, Killswitch and Will Atkinson, I have decided to give Phase Seven a rest. My musical direction has changed somewhat, but I am very proud of signing and promoting new talent. I have decided to concentrate on what I love the most, and that is creating original electronic music. Quartermass is my new project, working with vocalist and guitarist Michael-Lee Collard, creating alternative electro and guitar based EDM. I’ve also changed direction with the Steve Noxx productions and DJ sets – slowing down the bpm a little and focusing on house / electro / techno.

Thank you for all of your support and good luck to all of the artists we signed to Phase Seven Records.
